Syringe Access Program Delivery

SANE will deliver all services and supplies to you, at a time & place you arrange with a SANE representative. You can do this by calling a staff member between 10 am and 8 pm, Tuesday through Saturday or by contacting us by email. If you call outside of business hours, leave a message.  We will return your call usually within 24 hours, definitely within 48 hours.

During the call or at the exchange, we will ask for a bit of information about you, but nothing that can identify you.  None of the information SANE asks for can identify anyone.  SANE does NOT keep track of individuals we provide services to. This information is used by us in several ways including, to improve our services, use in funding proposals & reports that support SANE’s activities and for scientific conferences & community presentations.

 We will also ask you:

  • what type of syringes you prefer

  • what other risk reduction supplies you want, and

  • what information you want to help you have the safest shots/hits and sexual contact you can.

The most popular syringes are:

  • 1 cc 27g x ½” (known as 100’s);

  • ½ cc 28g x ½” (known as 50’s).

We have other types & sizes available and almost any kind can be ordered.  Your SANE representative will talk with you about which syringes you prefer and/or which syringes may give you the best results with the least amount of risk.

Some of the risk reduction supplies we offer are:

  • Ties/tourniquets

  • Biohazard waste containers

    • We have sharps containers in the following sizes: 8-gal; 2½-gal; ¼-quart, and FitPaks which hold about 10 syringes.

  • Alcohol wipes

  • Sterile water (when needed)

  • Cookers

  • Cottons

  • Condoms

  • Lube

  • Abscess care supplies (bandages, gauze, medical tape, etc.)

These are the supplies we try to have for you at all times.   However, we are a non-profit organization funded mostly by charitable organizations and concerned community members (go to the Donations page if you want to help SANE).  California public health agencies do not provide funding for HIV prevention, including SEP.  Therefore, SANE sometimes runs short of funds and/or supplies.  We will always tell you exactly what we have available when you call.

Sane can also provide written information (pamphlets, brochures) and/or referrals on:

  • vein care

  • overdose recognition, prevention, & responses

  • prevention & care of abscesses & other soft tissue infections (like flesh-eating bacteria & wound botulism)

  • safer sex strategies

  • HIV prevention & treatment

  • hepatitis C virus (HCV) prevention & treatment

  • prevention & treatment of other sexually transmitted infections

  • muscling (injecting into muscles), etc.

You can also find this information under Pamphlets.

During the delivery, we will pick up your used syringes.

SANE asks participants to return their used syringes to SANE and we will get rid of them properly.  SANE will give you official biohazard waste containers (known as sharps7) to put your used syringes in and/or give you written directions on how to make your own sharps container8.  These directions also describe how to handle used syringes safely (so you don’t get stuck) and what to do if you do get stuck (accidental needle-stick injury)9.  If you want to get rid of the used syringes/sharps yourself, we will provide you with a list of places where you can get rid of your used syringes and sharps for free10.  Also, if you see syringes discarded in public places, call us & we will come and collect them in a safe manner and get rid of them properly.  (For more information about getting rid of used syringes, see the Disposal page).
